The twin children of Jupiter/Zeus

The year opens with twins. Diana and Apollo, children of Jupiter/Zeus, are the Moon and the Sun: both archers, both shown with bow and arrows, and together a picture of balance in the natural world.

Diana is the goddess of the Hunt and of “Wildness”, protector of women, animals and nature, often pictured with wolves or deer. Apollo is the god of “Reason” and Light. Side by side they are the interplay of darkness, shadow and light.
